2 Elements Your New Alarm System Should Have

by Kirk Willis

If you want to increase the security of your home, a great way to do so is with an alarm system. With an alarm system, you can sleep a little easier knowing that your home is protected and watched over. Before you invest in an alarm system, you need to know what type of alarm system to look for. A hybrid alarm system that is both hardwired and wireless, and go beyond the standard alarm for a more integrated system.

Hybrid Alarm System

The first thing that you want to look out is how the alarm system is powered. Back in the day, all alarm systems were hardwired and connected to analog phone lines. This lead to the classic scenarios where when the power was cut, the system didn't function.

To get around this impasse, and ensure that your security system always functions properly, hybrid systems were created. Hybrid systems use both hardwire and wireless elements. You want a system that is hardwired into your electrical system, but is also connected to a battery back-up should the power go out, your system will still operate.

For communicating with the alarm company that something is amiss, you want your system to rely on multiple means of communication. A system that is hardwires through your home internet system but will also send out a signal over the cellular network if that fails is another way to ensure that no matter what happens, your alarm will be able to convey to your alarm company that something is wrong.

Integrated Alarm Systems

Alarm systems of the past would just send a signal to the alarm company when your alarm was triggered. Within your home, a loud verbal alarm signal would go off, and perhaps you would get a phone call. The system items should wake you up and alert you that something is amiss.

With new integrated alarm systems, they are designed to respond to the situation at hand and offer you assistance dealing with that particular situation. For example, if your alarm is triggered because the fire system goes off, your system has the ability to unlock your doors to make it easier for your kids to get out. Your system may also turn off the HVAC system in your home so that smoke is not being automatically funneled through your home. Or if your carbon dioxide system is activated, your locks will also be unlocked to help your kids get out, a verbal noise alarm would be activated, and anything that could produce a flame would be shut off.

Integrated alarm systems are connected to multiple elements of your home. This can allow you to remotely control your HVAC system for example. This integration can also allow your alarm company to take steps to make the situation you are under, be it a fire alarm, break-in or carbon dioxide leak, better through proactively using all of your smart technology to help you out.
